He might not have won this year's Pritzker, but Toyo Ito has won another prestigious, global prize: a 2010 Praemium Imperiale.
Established by the Japan Art Association in 1989, the annual award recognizes lifetime achievements in artistic disciplines not covered by Nobel Prizes. Each winner receives 15 million yens (approximately $169,000).
The 2010 laureates are:
Architecture: Toyo Ito, Japan
Theater/Film: Sophia Loren, Italy
Painting: Enrico Castellani, Italy
Sculpture: Rebecca Horn, Germany
Music: Maurizio Pollini, Italy
In addition, the association bestowed its annual young artist award to the Asian Youth Orchestra. The group will receive 5 million yens (approximately $56,000).
The winners will be recognized at an October 13 ceremony in Tokyo, where they will receive gold medals and diplomas from His Imperial Highness Prince Hitachi, honorary patron of the Japan Art Association. For more info, visit the Praemium Imperiale Web site.
