WASHINGTON The Urban Land Institute (ULI) Terwilliger Center for Workforce Housing is collecting entries for a competition to recognize leadership and creativity in the provision of housing for America’s working families.
The Jack Kemp Workforce Housing Models of Excellence Awards recognizes developers demonstrating leadership and creativity in providing expanded housing opportunities for America’s working families. “This award program highlights the growing need for housing that is affordable to people who are essential to the economic vitality, strength, and well-being of our communities,” said J. Ronald Terwilliger, chairman and founder of the Washington-based ULI Terwilliger Center for Workforce Housing.
The awards program honors the legacy of former U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Jack Kemp for his tireless efforts to improve affordable housing opportunities for America’s working families. Secretary Kemp authored the federal Enterprise Zones legislation, which encouraged entrepreneurship and job creation in urban America, and he was a strong proponent of expanding home ownership among moderate-income families through resident management and ownership of public and subsidized housing.
The Jack Kemp Workforce Housing Models of Excellence Awards competition is open to all developers in the United States. The entry deadline is May 15, 2011. Winners will be honored during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on September 21, 2011. Winning entries will be showcased in Urban Land magazine. The ULI Terwilliger Center’s National Advisory Board will serve as the jury for the Awards.
A new category to recognize exemplary workforce housing developments in resort communities has been added to the 2011 competition.
Developments will be selected based on the following criteria:
• Affordability
• Proximity to centers of employment and transportation hubs
• Quality of the design and site planning
• Involvement of public and private partnerships
• Use of regulatory reform to reduce costs
• Energy efficiency
• Sustainable green construction and land development
• Innovative building technologies and systems
• Replicability of the development
